A Guideline Document On Electronic Data Publishing For MAST Research Projects ISMARÉ (Irish Marine Data Centre) MAST-EC

The aim of this Guideline Document is to provide a practical handbook that anyone wishing to publish marine data (i.e. produce an electronic data product) can refer to for guidance. It highlights the need to always have a clear "publishing objective" and target audience so that the electronic product delivers the data to identified users in a way that will promote their understanding of that information and maximise the re-use. It is aimed at those who fund and participate in marine science and technology (MAST) projects including project co-ordinators, scientists, data managers, developers, publishers and policy makers such as the MAST Office. http://www.marine.ie/datacentre

Analysis of Climate Variability. Applications of Statistical Techniques
H. Von Storch & A. Navarra (eds.) Springer-Verlag 3-540-58318-X Various problems in climate research, which require the use of advanced statistical techniques, are considered in this book. The examples emphasize the notion that the knowledge of statistical techniques alone is not sufficient. Instead, good physical understanding of the specific problems in climate research, such as the enormous size of the phase space, the correlation of processes on all time and space scales and the availability of essentially one observational record, are needed to guide the researcher in choosing the right approach to obtain meaningful answers. Aspects covered are the examination of the observational record based on instrumental and proxy data, the concept of stochastic climate models and the confirmation of dynamic climate models, the evaluation of forecasts and pattern-related analytical techniques such as empirical orthogonal functions, teleconnections, singular spectrum analysis and principal oscillation patterns. The book is a collection of the contributions given during an "autumn school" on "Statistical Analysis in Climate Research" supported by the European Community.
Analysis of Observed Chaotic Data Henry D.I. Abarbanel Institute for Nonlinear Science Springer-Verlag New York, Inc. 0-387-94523-7 This book develops a clear and systematic treatment of time series of data, regular and chaotic, that one finds in observations of nonlinear systems. The reader is led from measurements of one or more variables through the steps of building models of the source as a dynamical system, classifying the source by its dynamical characteristics, and finally predicting and controlling the dynamical system. The text examines methods for separating the signal of physical interest from contamination by unwanted noise, and for investigating the phase space of the chaotic signal and its properties. The emphasis throughout is on the use of the modern mathematical tools for investigating chaotic behaviour to uncover properties of physical systems. The methods require knowledge of dynamical systems at the advanced undergaduate level and some knowledge of Fourier transforms and other signal processing methods. The toolkit develop in the book will provide the reader with efficient and effective methods for analyzing signals from nonlinear sources; these methods are applicable to problems of control, communication, and prediction in a wide variety of systems encountered in physics, chemistry, biology, and geophysics.

Coastal Dynamics'97 Conference Proceedings (Plymouth, 23-27 June, 1997) Varios autores Ed. Edward B. Thornton American Society of Civil Engineers 0-7844-0321-X The world's beaches are among the most dynamic environments of our planet and yet are also experiencing the greatest pressure from mans activities. The Coastal Dynamics Conferences provide a forum for researchers involved in the study of beach and nearshore dynamics. The focus of these 106 papers deals primarily with natural beach and nearshore environments and with man-made structures to the extent that they influence neighboring natural environments. This book encompasses a wide range of approaches and embraces field, laboratory, theoretical and numerical studies. Topics include sand suspension, shingle and mixed grain sizes, wave propagation in shallow water, boundary layers and mixing, sediment transport predictors, breaking waves, megaripples and bars, remote sensing and video, wave-current interaction, longshore currents, beach profiles, regional studies, rip currents, longterm morphodynamics, effects of coastal structures, swash and intertidal, beach nourishment, morphodynamic modeling, wave-induced circulation, tidal inlets, groupiness and long waves, and seabed effects.
Coastal stabilization (Advanced series on ocean engineering, vol. 14) Richard Silvester, John R.C. Hsu
World Scientific 981-02-3154-7 This book discusses coastal defense measures and suggests better alternatives, which have been relatively static for some decades, with protagonists copying solutions of others even before they have been tested by Nature. Knowledge of the pulsative nature of littoral drift and formation of offshore bars due to the interaction of storm waves and swells is important. Also, the recognition of crenulate-shaped bays, either with or without littoral drift, can lead to an alternative mode of stabilization known as headland control. This is shown to be preferable to seawalls, groins, detached breakwaters, and renourishment, as a permanent means of defense. The erosion occuring in front of seawalls and downcoast of a large structure, such as a harbor breakwater, is discussed in detail. Alternatives to rubble-mound construction in the form of geotextile units filled with weak mortar are presented. Suggestions for designing stable recreational beaches is also demonstrated. In fract, many novel approaches are included together with graphs and tables for many applications. This book is intended as a reference book in civil and environmental engineering, geography, geomorphology, and coastal management. It may also serve as a handbook for engineers involved in the design of maritime structures, developers of leisure beach resorts, and local government engineers maintaining shorelines.
Coastal zone space. Prelude to conflict? E.D. Goldberg Evironment and Development UNESCO 92-3-102953-3 Coastal zone space: prelude to conflict? addresses one of the "critical uncertainties" identified by the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, June 1992) concerning the environment and the sustainable development of our planet's resources, namely the capacity of the coastal areas. The focus here is on the future of the coastal zone, that narrow strip of our Earth where the often heavily populated and exploited land and coastal marine areas form the transition zone to the as-yet-more-virgin deep ocean.

Currents of change: El Niño's impact on climate and society Michael H. Glantz Cambridge University Press
0-521-57659-8 Every year, extreme climatic problems occur around the globe, with droughts in some places and floods in others. Recently, we have come to recognize that some of these widely dispersed climatic extremes might have a common origin in the periodic warming of sea surface water in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. A centry ago, Peruvians connected this appearance of warm water every December to changes in environmental conditions and christened it "El Niño", the Spanish term for the Christ Child. In some years, El Niño lingers, and seems to be connected with droughts in Australia, Brazil or India, reduced incidence of tropical hurricanes on the east coast of the USA, and floods in Peru. Currents of change explains in simple terms what El Niño is, how its effects might be forecast and its far reaching impacts on all of us.
Data analysis methods in physical oceanography William J. Emery and Richard E. Thomson
Pergamon 0-08-031434-1 This book provides a comprehensive and practical compilation of the essential information and analysis techniques required for the advanced processing and interpretation of digital spatio-temporal data in physical oceanography as well in other branches of the geophysical sciences. It assumes a fundamental understanding of calculus and is directed primarily towards scientists and engineers in industry, government and universities, including graduate and advanced undergraduate students. Spanning five chapters and numerous appendices, the book provides a valuable compendium of the fundamental data processing tools reuired by the marine scientist. Many of these tools will be of use in other branches of the physical and natural sciences. The book begins with detailed discussion of the instruments used to collect oceanographic data and the limitation of the resulting data. Data presentation and display methods are reviewed in chapter two. The remaining three chapters supply detailed information on a broad range of statistical and deterministic data analysis methods ranging from established methods such as Analysis of Variance methods and Principal Component Analysis, to more recent data analysis techniques such as Wavelet Transforms and Fractals. Each technique is illustrated by a worked example and a large number of references are given for the reader who may want to dig deeper into the subject. No other book of this type exists that brings together in one volume information on the measurement systems, data editing, data reduction/processing and analysis and interpretation. This book brings all of this information into a single volume which can act as a text for the neophyte or a reference volume for the experienced scientist. The book is both a guide and an encyclopaedia to modern data processing methods in the geophysical sciences. Many non-oceanographers should find this volume a handy reference on their shelves.

Medio ambiente y desarrollo en las áreas litorales. Guía práctica para la planificación y gestión integradas Juan Manuel Barragán Muñoz
Oikos-tau, s.a.

Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems. A Dynamical Systems Approach to Machine Intelligence. Bart Kosko
Prentice Hall 0-13-611435-0 The field of neural networks and fuzzy systems have evolved rapidly in recent years. Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems is the first book to combine these related fields at the theoretical level of first principles and the applications level of new adaptive fuzzy systems in control and signal processing. The book develops neural networks as both trainable dynamical systems and stochastic gradient systems and focusses on principles of learning, self-organization, and stability. It presents the new geometric theory of fuzzy sets as points in hypercubes and fuzzy systems as parallel associative reasoning systems -"principle-based" systems- generated from expert advice or training data. Finally, Kosko shows how to generate structured fuzzy systems with unsupervised or supervised neural networks and how to convert neural networks to structured fuzzy systems. Includes detailed theoretical and software homework problems. Also includes neural network and fuzzy system IBM PC software.

Water wave propagation over uneven bottoms, part 1: linear wave propagation (Advanced series on ocean engineering, vol. 13) Maarten W. Dingemans
World Scientific 981-02-3994-7 The primary objective of this book is to provide a review of techniques available for the problems of wave propagation in regions with uneven beds as they are encountered in coastal areas. The view taken is that the techniques should be useful for application in advisory practice. However, effort is put into a precise definition of the underlying physical principles so that the validity of the methods used can be evaluated. Both linear and non-linear wave propagation techniques are discussed. Because of its length, the book comes in two parts, part 1 covering primarily linear wave propagation, and part 2 covering nonlinear wave propagation.
